DAY 27: Awakening to a Father’s Heart

by Candace Lahr, Director, House of Prayer for Everyone WA

Praying for earthly fathers who can imitate their heavenly Father.

““As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:16-17)

In this story of Jesus’ baptism we are given an amazing glimpse into the relationship He had with His Father and it gives us great insight into what our Heavenly Father designed our earthly fathers to be and do.

It must have been an incredible moment for Jesus as He rises up out of the waters of baptism to hear His Father’s voice echo from the heavens and remind Him of who He is and for whom He belongs: ‘YOU ARE MY SON! You are known! You are seen! You are not a stranger! You are not an orphan! You are family! You are not alone! You belong and you belong to Me! You matter!’

It must have been a very emotional and moving moment for Jesus as He then hears His Father say, ‘I LOVE YOU! I love who You are! I love what You have become! I love You and I am unashamed to say it to You and to say it publicly!’

It must have been a very empowering moment for Jesus to hear His Father also affirm Him and declare how pleased He was with Him. And not just pleased, but WELL pleased! Well pleased with His heart, His attitude, His willingness, His sacrifice, and His obedience!

Our Heavenly Father so beautifully demonstrates in this moment the kind of earthly fathers He is looking for and the role they are to have in the lives of their sons and daughters. Fathers have the incredible privilege and responsibility to speak identity, affection and affirmation over their children just like our heavenly Father spoken these over His Son Jesus!

With such a significant responsibility, is it any wonder that the enemy of our souls has so purposefully attacked the role of fatherhood in our society? As a result, we find so many broken men and women and children who don’t know who they and how valuable they are, who don’t feel loved and therefore seek love in all the wrong places, and who are striving for affirmation from anyone or anything that will offer it to them.

Let’s ask our Heavenly Father to bring healing and restoration to the fathers of our nation who themselves did not have a father who declared identity, expressed affection or nurtured them with affirmation.

Let’s also ask our Heavenly Father to bring restoration to our families by giving revelation to fathers all across this nation of their precious and powerful responsibility to declare identity, express affection and offer affirmation to their children (no matter what age they are) and to then empower them to step into this vital role with joy and strength and intentionality!

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the amazing way You demonstrated what it means to be a father when you showed up and spoke over Jesus at His baptism! As the song we sing declares, “You are a Good, Good Father” and You are “perfect in all of Your ways.” As we pray for restoration of our families here in Australia we want to ask You to awaken and restore the hearts of our fathers to beat with Your heart and to fulfil their role in our families of declaring identity, expressing affection and affirming their children. Amen!
