A call to trust the pronouncements and promises of God – for what He says, He will do.
1“Listen to me, all who hope for deliverance—
all who seek the Lord!
Consider the rock from which you were cut,
the quarry from which you were mined.
2 Yes, think about Abraham, your ancestor,
and Sarah, who gave birth to your nation.
Abraham was only one man when I called him.
But when I blessed him, he became a great nation.”
3 The Lord will comfort Israel again
and have pity on her ruins.
Her desert will blossom like Eden,
her barren wilderness like the garden of the Lord.
Joy and gladness will be found there.
Songs of thanksgiving will fill the air …
9 Wake up, wake up, O Lord! Clothe yourself with strength!
Flex your mighty right arm!
Rouse yourself as in the days of old
when you slew Egypt, the dragon of the Nile.
10 Are you not the same today,
the one who dried up the sea,
making a path of escape through the depths
so that your people could cross over?
11 Those who have been ransomed by the Lord will return.
They will enter Jerusalem singing,
crowned with everlasting joy.
Sorrow and mourning will disappear,
and they will be filled with joy and gladness …
17 Wake up, wake up, O Jerusalem!
You have drunk the cup of the Lord’s fury.
You have drunk the cup of terror,
tipping out its last drops …
22 This is what the Sovereign Lord,
your God and Defender, says:
“See, I have taken the terrible cup from your hands.
You will drink no more of my fury.
When God says he will do something what is our natural response?
If you’re anything like me, my first response is often, “really?”
Will you really?
Will you really do what you said you will do?
So often God’s promises are so good, that in a broken world they can often seem too good to be true.
In this time when many are crying out “Australia for Jesus”, “It’s time for an Awakening!” “We are in an Awakening!” “Jesus is Awakening Australia!”, and at a time when it would appear that God Himself is saying and demonstrating that He will heal our land, temptation is readily knocking at the door of our hearts to say, “These are all mere words, and this Awakening will not happen.”
However, my encouragement for you today is this, when the Lord pronounces something, rather than brush it aside, think of it as too good to be true, or maybe even think that it applies to someone or somewhere else, it is for you to awaken to the “will” of God, the “I said it, so you better believe it” of God.
In this dialogue in Isaiah 51 that we see the Lord pronouncing what He will do for Israel. The response of the author is exactly what I believe our response should be to the current Awakening of God that we are seeing. He cries to God in verse 9, “Wake up, wake up, oh Lord” and then he cries out “Wake up, wake up, oh Jerusalem!”
He calls the Lord into action. He reminds the Lord of His promise and He backs the Lord’s faithfulness. It is as if he is saying, “You said it, I believe it to be true, now do what only You can do!”
But the author doesn’t stop there, he calls his city, his nation, to awaken to action too!
I invite you to cry out, “Wake up” to our cities, to our nations and indeed to the promises of God.
I invite you to awaken to the promise of God for His people, and I believe this includes Australia, and that means you too.
God made this promise, “…if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
When God says it, He means it.
Oh God, awake. Awake to action. May You sweep across our nation. We pray for an increase in the rain that is already falling, naturally and supernaturally. We pray that You would restore marriages, revive families, and reinvigorate the church. We pray that You would reveal who You are to our nation’s leaders. We pray that You would reverse laws that are contrary to Your heart. End abortion. End disunity. End the disillusionment with marriage.
May we Your people arise. May we awake to action. May prayer and fasting and repentance and selfless love and compassionate and mercy and gospel proclamation be our everyday reality. Oh Lord, we know You hear our prayer and we believe that You are who You say You are and You will do what You say You will do! Thank You for Awakening Australia.
