DAY 23: Taking Up Our Spiritual Authority to Govern, to Rule and Reign in Heavenly Places

by Pastors Norman and Barbara Miller, Tabernacle of David Cairns and Centre for International Reconciliation and Peace

Awakening to freedom and praying for godly government in Australia.

“For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.”
(Isaiah 9:6-7).

As Isaiah 9:6-7 tells us, the government is on the shoulders of Jesus and we need to pray that our government will align itself with His plans and purposes. As Jesus is the Head of the Church and we are His body, we need to also realize that the government of Australia is on our shoulders and we are in a sense, spiritual governors. We need to take spiritual responsibility to pray for those who govern us to do so in righteousness and justice and with God’s heart. The Bible tells us to “pray for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:2). But we need to go a step further and take up our spiritual authority to govern or rule and reign from heavenly places. Ephesians 2:6 tells us that “God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.” The Bible further tells us that “His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 3:10).

There is a heavenly war going on over our nation over religious freedom, abortion, euthanasia, the sanctity of marriage as being between one man and one woman, the education of our children etc. We need to enforce godly Biblical principles in the heavenly sphere and the earthly sphere by our prayers, actions and how we live our lives. We also need to pray the church will be in harmony over these issues and not be a divided body as it weakens our witness. It is the heart of Jesus for His body to be in unity and have the Father’s blessing (John 17).

Dear Lord Jesus, help us to bring Your godly principles to our lives, our witness and our prayers and to take upon our shoulders the spiritual responsibility for the government of our nation. We pray for godly men and women who fear you to come into government in our nation and we pray for the present government and Prime Minister Scott Morrison for clear vision, godly strategies, strength to deal with opposition and to govern wisely. May our Prime Minister pray the prayer of Solomon, “Give your servant therefore a discerning heart to govern your people, that I may distinguish between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” (1 Kings 3:9).

We pray that our government will make decisions according to Your will, Heavenly Father, in regard to the Religious Freedom Review report before it. We pray that the sanctity of life, marriage and family will be preserved and that our children will be protected from doctrines that are ungodly. Amen.
