DAY 24: Light in Darkness

by Sue Tinworth, Partners in Prayer & Evangelism

Revere Jesus – so His light in you will be hope to those in darkness. Jesus is the way, the truth and life – eternal and abundant!

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. … He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and for ever” (Isaiah 9:2,7).

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord will arise upon you and His glory appears over you … Lift up your eyes and look about you …” (Isaiah 60:1-4).

Descending darkness covers the earth and people, causing confusion, deception and blindness – immobilising some with fear and lulling many to sleep. Remember, even the wise virgins were asleep and had to be roused when the bridegroom arrived! Have you become dull to sin and your captivity? Are you living in a form of godliness rather than freedom and power? Is your light hidden and your voice silenced?

In the face of approaching darkness Habakkuk declared, “I will take my stand at my watch post and station myself on the tower and look out to see what he will say to me…” (Habakkuk 2:1).

Our world needs a clear revelation of who God is! Many of us no longer know Him. We’ve constructed our own image of god and our own ethics. The Bible frequently tells us that God is RIGHTEOUS (good, holy) AND JUST (kind, merciful). Some only uphold God’s JUSTICE – interpreting that God is love and will accept all forms of sexuality. Some only uphold God’s RIGHTEOUSNESS and use it without love as condemnation. God’s goodness and kindness are constant because His holiness is in complete balance with His mercy. Jesus exemplified perfect RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUSTICE when the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had sexual intercourse with someone who was not her husband. Jesus said to the religious leaders, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And Jesus said to the woman, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more” (John 8:3-11).

Jesus came to bring life eternal and abundant. That’s why he hates and names the things that drain life. Choose Life and offer Life to those around you! As Jesus said, “rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness… I am sending you to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me” (Acts 26:16-18).

Abba Father, we repent that we have been distracted, deceived, overwhelmed and silenced by darkness. We have hidden Your light under shame and political correctness. We declare, by the grace and power of Christ, ‘We will walk this way no more!’

Open the eyes of the people to see Jesus – the great light! We pray for a revelation of who You are, good and merciful Father, so we can worship You fully and walk in Your wholeness as light, hope, love and life to our world. We declare, with faith, hope and joy, the increase of Jesus’ kingdom and peace without end, His justice and righteousness from this time forth and forevermore! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
