DAY 23: Watchmen on the Wall

by Peter Kentley, Christian Federation

God calls us to be watchmen who earnestly pray for the fulfilment of His destiny for Australia.

“You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
    and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
You shall no more be termed Forsaken,
    and your land shall no more be termed Desolate,
but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her,
    and your land Married;
for the Lord delights in you,
    and your land shall be married.
For as a young man marries a young woman,
    so shall your sons marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
    so shall your God rejoice over you” (Isaiah 62:3-5)..
“On your walls, O Jerusalem,
    I have set watchmen;
all the day and all the night
    they shall never be silent.
You who put the Lord in remembrance,
    take no rest,
and give him no rest
    until he establishes Jerusalem
    and makes it a praise in the earth” (Isaiah 62:6-7).

I am writing this devotional in Tel Aviv near Jerusalem where Isaiah talked about watchmen bringing before God in prayer his purpose for their nation. I have journeyed to Israel this month to be part of the centenary commemoration and reenactment of the Australian Light Horse charge on Beersheba during World War 1. This historic event occurred at 4:30 pm on Wednesday 31 October, 1917.

The Germans and the Turks occupied Palestine at that time and wanted to capture the Suez Canal. Under General Allenby, the British and ANZACs pushed the Ottomans back to Gaza and were then stuck in the desert, three-days’ ride out of Egypt and out of water. The situation was dire. But under General Sir Harry Chauvel, the Australian Light Horse charged Beersheba successfully and captured the wells of Abraham to save the battle.

On the same day, 31 October 1917, the British Parliament issued the Balfour Declaration. This public statement opened the way for the re-establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948.
You can read these stories in more detail on Jill Curry’s two excellent websites:

Hence the Australian Light Horse Charge on 31 October 1917 was not only critical in overcoming German and Turkish control at Beersheba, but it also led to the liberation of both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and the re-establishment of the modern state of Israel. The miracle of the Beersheba Light Horse charge should give us all encouragement as we charge forward in prayer for Australia at this time.

I have been working with other Christian leaders to help facilitate the daily ZOOM conference calls praying for a miracle for marriage. These have been greatly encouraging. (Please join us if you are able – see details at the bottom of devotional.)

Abraham stood in the gap for Sodom in Genesis 18:16-33. Just as God called Abraham to be a watchman for the people of Sodom, God is calling us to do the same for the people of Australia and to pray for their salvation. God gave the same charge to His people in Isaiah 62:6-7 (as shown above).
You are reading this devotional because this month in Australia, God is allowing the voting population to choose how we want to relate to him in the future.

If our Judeo/Christian-based nation gives up its God-given foundation of society – that of marriage between one man and one woman – and in its place, chooses the mandates of the new Sodom, then it will be a hard road ahead. Remember the Jews chose Barabbas in the plebiscite given by Pontius Pilate and they lost their nation from AD 70 to 1948.

Ultimately God will have his way but he is allowing Australians a choice in the route taken. But we as praying watchmen also have a part to play. We have a watchman-call to pray for our nation at this time and also a call to warn people to be careful how they vote. The consequences are dire.

Prayer:Dear Lord, you have called Australia to yourself and used our nation as a co-protector in the re-establishment of the modern state of Israel. We thank you for your blessing on our nation and we now seek your divine intervention in steering us through the minefield of Same-Sex ‘marriage’, that can derail our future as a Great Southland of the Holy Spirit.

As you were willing to save Sodom from destruction at the suggestion of your servant Abraham for the sake of 10 righteous men, so we, many more than 10, come before you on bended knee asking that our nation may follow your ways and not surrender your brilliant plan of marriage as between a man and a woman. In Jesus’ name we pray.
