DAY 17: This Thing Called Love

by Rev Ying Yee, Chinese Christian Church

Marriage is built on the strong foundation of God’s love revealed in Christ’s death in our place.

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (1 John 4:9-11).

Love is love but the reality is that not everything labelled love is actually love. Many of us know of the experience of having been sold something, which we thought was a genuine product, only to discover that it proved to be nothing more than a cheap imitation.

Similarly what is often passed around as love is nothing more than a cheap imitation product. This is particularly true when it comes to building strong marriages. If the Same Sex marriage debate has drawn our attention to anything it is shown us that many heterosexual marriages are falling apart at the seams. Divorce is hovering just under 50%. As well as this many marriages are still legally together but filled with tension, anger and darkness.

However the solution is not to discard marriage altogether, nor is it to redefine it and reduce it to nothing more than feelings and passions. Marriage has been created and defined by God as that between a man and a woman in a faithful, exclusive, life long, committed, LOVING relationship. But what is this thing called love?

This is nicely summed us for us in 1 John 4:9-11. Here John tells us what true love is all about.

a. God is the source of true love and therefore it is only those who truly know God who truly understand love in all its beauty. Outside this love is just a cheap imitation love.

b. Jesus’ death as our substitute is the supreme demonstration of what true love is all about. In other words we can never understand what love is until we understand the cross of Jesus.

c. When we understand Jesus’ death as our substitute then we will know how to truly love others in like manner.

d. One of the best places to demonstrate Christ’s love is in marriage but more specifically in the way the husband ought to love his wife. The lesser the person loves Jesus the weaker his love for his wife becomes. But the more he grows in his love for Jesus the more he will love his wife like Jesus. When this happens how can the marriage not flourish and blossom and be a source of endless joy, praise and blessing, not only to each other but to all those around them.

The best way to expose a cheap imitation is to show up what the genuine product looks like. One of the best ways to expose the hollowness of Same Sex marriage is to show how good the traditional marriage is and this is only possible when we remember that love can only be understood when we understand the cross of Christ and seek to love like Christ.

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you that you loved us not because we loved you but simply because you chose to love us and gave us your son as a substitute in our place. Help all husbands to love their wives in the same way and in no lesser way than in the way Jesus loved us and in so doing may we see the marriages, which you have designed and created from the beginning, to be a source of endless joy and praise to your name and a blessing to those around us. Amen
