DAY 25: Marriage is Beautiful

by Pastor Phil Pringle, Co-founder C3 Global Movement and C3 Church in Australia

Marriage is beautifully designed by God as a gift for a man and a woman to enjoy.

“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
And Adam said:
“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”
Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:21-24 NKJV).

Adam was lonely. God had concluded that it was “not good that man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18). The answer to Adam’s need for a companion was within him but he would have to lay down himself for his helper to be discovered. God anaesthetised the man, taking a rib from his side as he slept. God is active when we sleep, as well as when we are awake, preparing beautiful surprises for us born of His love.

God is a sculptor of the finest degree, designer of the highest order, artistic creator of beauty above and beyond all. He had turned the bone into the beautiful. Besides fulfilling the need, God creates what is attractive, soulful and endearing to the man. A perfect match. God brings what he has formed to the man. This tells us marriage is designed by the Lord. When God is involved in forming the relationship of any couple, the chances of success are enormously improved.

Adam immediately resonated with the woman that God had brought to him. He calls her his soulmate, his companion, his wife.

Moses says, “therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). To “become one flesh” is both a process and an event. Sexual union obviously is a moment. Companionship is a lifelong journey.

Because woman was taken out of man, he is incomplete without being joined to the woman.

The word “wife” is singular. Man is to be “joined” to one wife. This is confirmed by Jesus Himself (Mk 10:6-8). The man is to ‘cleave’, ‘glue himself to’ his wife, not allowing anything to separate them.

Becoming “one flesh” refers to the act of sex. This is a gift God gives to a man and a woman joined in the marriage covenant. This is the act that triggers the union of soul, spirit, mind, heart and body of the two. It is the beautiful and pleasurable act which God designed for the creation of people from that point onward and for the enjoyment of the married couple.

O Lord,

Turn our hearts to Your ways!
We have departed from You –
Lead us back.
Help us accept Your loving kindness
Displayed in Eden.
For all those around us who are wounded,
Those who have lost their way,
Help us guide them to You, the Healer.
So many wounds from marriages fallen,
And families hurting.
Heal broken hearts,
Remove rejection and judgment.
We pray for our hearts to reflect Yours to our nation.
Help us as a nation to walk in Your ways –
To walk in Your original intention,
To walk in Your ways,
Where life and blessing abound.
Help us O Lord!
