DAY 28: God, Life, Choice and Sex

by Pastor James Macpherson, Calvary Christian Church in Queensland and Australian Christian Churches National Executive Member

God’s created order is for our good.

“The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of man.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh” (Genesis 2:23-24).

The first two chapters of the Bible present four great subjects – God, Life, Choice and Sex.

The book of Genesis begins by introducing God, the Uncaused Cause who, being self-sufficient, has need of nothing and of no-one.

The text quickly moves on to the creation of life wherein God breathes His Spirit into a dusty form, thus creating the first man.

On that sixth day of creation God tells Adam, just before He created Eve, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden.” (Genesis 2:16). Of course, He also tells Adam not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil lest he die.

Then in creating Eve from Adam’s rib, God “blessed them” (Genesis 1:28) and gave them more instructions. From this we see that God gifted them the power and dignity of ‘choice’, the third great subject of Scripture.
The instruction not to eat certain fruit is not a restriction on the freedom of Adam and Eve but a guarantee of it. In the West we have come to define freedom as a removal of all boundaries. And so we mistakenly believe that guidelines limit human freedoms.

This, of course, is a nonsense.

To eat without restriction is to become a glutton, not free. To drink without restriction is to become a drunk, not free. To engage in sex without any boundaries is promiscuity, not freedom. A life without any boundaries is slavery. The boundaries God placed upon human behaviour were not to rob men of their freedom but to safeguard it.

Notice how God defines choice. True choice is fully informed consent. God gives Adam and Eve all the information and a full understanding of the consequences. Only then are they truly free to choose.
The final subject of Genesis is that of ‘sex’. God tells Adam and Eve, “A man will leave his mother and father and cleave to his wife and the two shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).

This raises the question, why did God invent sex? Well it is through sexual intercourse between a man and a woman that people get to do what only God can – create life!

God wanted mankind to experience the wonder of creating life and then, as mother and father, together nurture, educate, raise and ultimately empower that new human being to make his or her own choices, even as God empowers us.

Eventually that child will grow to marry and, through the sexual act, will in turn, experience the joy of doing what only God can do – creating life and empowering a person with choice. In this sense it could be argued that sexual intercourse between a man and a woman is the highest celebration of what it means to be made in the image of God.

This explains why sex is so powerful and why, having rejected God, Western culture replaces Him as a priority with sex. We are, after all, spiritual beings and sexual intercourse is as close as you can get to the mystical in a secular world.

If the West rejects God then we should expect Western popular culture to be the opposite of all that God intended. Our culture has replaced the created order of God, Life, Choice, Sex with Sex, Choice, Life, God.
Our culture rejects God and replaces Him with sex. But sex outside of the boundaries God designed to keep us free has consequences we don’t like. And so we suddenly elevate choice as the ultimate value, making choices that damage and even destroy life. We have become gods ourselves.

The so-called Culture Wars are ultimately a clash between two directions.

It is no coincidence that one of the words we use for coming to Christ is the word ‘repentance’ which literally means a change of direction.

Sin is the reversal of all that God intended. The good news is that Jesus is the reversal of the reversal! The direction of our nation can be corrected, the decline of our culture can be reversed.

Father God, truly Your ways are higher that our ways and Your thoughts higher than our thoughts. We marvel at how You created man and woman as the crowning achievement of Your creation. Thank You for the exquisite beauty of the one-flesh union of a husband and a wife. Thank You for the joy and wonder of being co-creators with You in bringing life into the world through our children. We repent of how we as Christians have too easily embraced the culture of divorce and remained silent about social practices such as promiscuity that undermines the dignity of marriage. Help us by the power of Your Holy Spirit to choose to uphold marriage and to model to the world its true meaning. In Jesus’ Name Amen.

While I have voted No you appear to be large “preaching to the Christian converted” which is not what Jesus did. I hope and have prayed that Christ’s Church would have got the message years ago that the highways and byways of the ‘market place’ including ONLY voting for Parliamentarianary representatives with committed Chistian beliefs has for too long fallen on deaf ears among MOST pastors/clergy actually having the courage to ASK their congregations to follow their leading instead of not wishing to take a principled stand!
