DAY 7: Mystery of Marriage

by Christopher and Rosina Gordon, Member Couple, Life, Marriage and Family Centre, Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney

Appreciating God’s plan for marriage and family.

“Yahweh God said, ‘It is not right that the man should be alone. I shall make him a helper.’ So from the soil Yahweh God fashioned all the wild animals and all the birds of heaven. These he brought to the man to see what he would call them; each one was to bear the name the man would give it. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of heaven and all the wild animals. But no helper suitable for the man was found for him. Then, Yahweh God made the man fall into a deep sleep. And, while he was asleep, he took one of his ribs and closed the flesh up again forthwith. Yahweh God fashioned the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man. And the man said: This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh! She is to be called Woman, because she was taken from Man. This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and they become one flesh. Now, both of them were naked, the man and his wife, but they felt no shame before each other”.  (Genesis 2:18-25).

Our loving Father-God in his abundance provides everything that Adam needs to live. We see in the Garden of Eden that human beings are the pinnacle of God’s creation. The plants and animals are alive but they cannot speak to God. Only Adam is able to converse with God and form a communion with Him. Reason and free will are the faculties that separate us from the animals and allow us to form a relationship with the Lord.

Adam has food and drink to nourish his body, he has some companionship with the animals but they are not his equal.

Adam is alone with God. He walks with God in the cool of the evening. There is no obstruction between God and man at this point pre-fall. Adam is in full communion with God.

Even though Adam is experiencing a perfect state of happiness, seeing and speaking with God face to face, he feels alone. Only half of humanity exists at this stage. While Adam is surrounded by wonderful things, “…no helper suitable for the man was found for him.” Adam cannot give himself to the animals, he cannot love them.

Eve, the woman, is a suitable helper. The sense here is not really that Eve is subordinate to Adam but that she helps him to be fully human. It is in men and women forming a covenant of love together that we have the full expression of the human person as God intended. Eve is divine help for Adam to be fully alive, she is a precious gift from the Lord.

Adam can speak to Eve, share his thoughts, dreams and desires with her and together they can form a communion of persons. Adam and Eve form a covenant, an exchange of persons and the first marriage. God Himself is there to bless their union.

The one-flesh union of Adam and Eve leads to the creation of new life. Three are required for this task though as the almighty God infuses a soul into the material nature of the offspring.

God’s plan for human sexuality, love and marriage is beautiful. While today we struggle with the effects of sin and our fallen human nature, through God’s grace we can still aim to fulfil His plan in our marriages and families.

It is very important that we make time to be alone with God and converse with Him as Adam and Eve did. Our communion with God only makes our communion with each other stronger. Let’s try our best to live out God’s plan and attract others to him through our example.

Help us to appreciate the beautiful gift of marital love in our world. Send your graces to husbands and wives everywhere. May we strive to make total gifts of ourselves to our spouses and our children. Let us receive guests into our homes with compassion. Help us to draw souls closer to you through our example of life-giving love.

Thank you for the wonderful gift of new life. Help us to receive children with gratitude and love. Bless those friends we have who are unable to have children, please enable them to live out fatherhood and motherhood in various ways.

Bless our nation and our leaders as we consider and debate the nature of marriage. Help our leaders to understand that they have stewardship of your laws and that they cannot change the laws that you have written into our nature.

Protect us from the forces which seek to destroy marriage and the family. Help us to think, pray and act to defend your truths from all lies and obfuscation.

Send your Holy Spirit upon us to give us courage in unsettling times. Help us to be the examples of love and truth that you have made us to be.

We ask this in Jesus’ name.

Amen. – Communication
